No matter how perfect we try to get rid of triggers, there may always be some triggers that can be either internally or externally generated. Be prepared and know how to deal with these triggers. When you are triggered for a smoke, think about the negative consequences of your behavior, that were discussed in step one. Think about how you may hurt your family and hurt your health. Think about how much money you have actually spend on tobacco over the last month, etc.
Research shows that the opioid receptors in the brain are activated when people smoke. These are the same areas that are activated by cocaine. When we go without smoking, depleted neurotransmitters may make us think about smoking often. Use the 4 step system of becoming aware of them, relabeling these false messages, and then redirecting your attention elsewhere. When you do this, not only will this help to get rid of your triggers, but you are training and rewiring your brain.
Redirecting and refocusing your brain on something else that requires your full attention such as a sport, going to the gym, doing yoga, is best. If you are triggered, calling supportive friends or family can be of great benefit. Talk to them until you feel better about not smoking, if they love you, they will help you.
Step 6: Manage emotions. Research shows that relapse is mostly caused by emotional states not physical dependency as once thought. So what this means to you is that you need to learn how to recognize your emotions and be able to manage them without your cigarette. Major emotional and mental states include stress, depression, anxiety and boredom or loneliness.
First learn how to recognize emotions. You can do this. This is why mindfulness practices such as mindful meditation is such a great practice because it helps the addict to recognize his emotional states. By looking inward, an addict can start to recognize when he feels a bit “off.” When this happens having doing something that engages your body such as exercise, go on a mindful walk, or participate in yoga.
Calling a friend, a supporter or sponsor that has a positive impact on you is a good idea to get your mind out of this funk. Having a poor relationship has shown to have opposite affects especially when you are trying to quit. Only the best of feelings should exist when around loved ones when one is trying to manage an addiction.
