The argument of whether it’s preferable to attend a local vs. an out-of area drug and alcohol rehab program can be made either way. However, the fact is that where one receives drug and alcohol rehab is not nearly as important as insuring that he/she attends the right program for his/her needs. The primary argument for out-of-area addiction treatment is that the patient is removed from the environment wherein he/she abused drugs or alcohol. While this is true, most inpatient alcohol and drug rehab programs do not allow clients to leave the premises unattended, nor do they allow unattended visitation, thereby negating the deleterious effects of the negative local environment. The primary argument against out-of-area drug and alcohol rehab is that client’s don’t want to travel for treatment.
