Green Day shocks iHeartRadio with an on-stage meltdown. I’m Misty Kingma, welcome back to ClevverMusic. I was on hand at the 2012 iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas this weekend, and what a show it was. The first night was off to a good start, with No Doubt opening the show and Pink surprising us with a cameo during “I’m Just a Girl”- complete with a little girl-on-girl kiss.
Then, later in the night when Green Day came on things got weird. The band was pissed that their set went from 45 minutes to 25 minutes to accommodate more Usher. Their performance was filled with more cursing and f-bombs than a rap song, and just when 40-year-old lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong was about to debut some new songs off new “Uno!” album, the teleprompter queued them with “1 minute” left.
Billie then threw a tantrum for his set being cut short and decided to take it out on Justin Bieber saying, “I’m not Justin Bieber, you motherfuckers!” Listen to what else he had to say.
The guys then smashed their guitars on stage and stormed off. Some think that the meltdown was staged since Clear Channel President John Sykes told Billboard they don’t care when sets go long, “We thought it was a great move and we were along for the joke.” Two days later on Sunday, news broke that Billie Joe Armstrong has checked into rehab for substance abuse. An apology on Green Day’s Facebook page said their set was not cut short by Clear Channel. So was this a planned PR move or was this rock n’ roll tantrum real? Their new album “Uno!” drops Tuesday, so is this just press for the new album? Tell us what you think down in the comment section.
Despite what the truth is, we know Billie Joe will remain as a mentor on Team Christina on ‘The Voice’ this season. Be sure to “Like” ClevverMusic on Facebook for up to date music news! See you next time.
