Highway Collision Victims Receiving Treatment

12 German tourists were taken to a hospital late Monday for treatment after escaping a fiery bus crash, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.

The coach they were traveling in along a Beijing highway rare-ended a container truck and burst into flames. The collision left five German nationals and a Chinese driver dead.

State-run Chinese Central Television reported that three seriously wounded German tourists were transported to the Tianjin Municipal People’s Hospital and the First Hospital on Monday afternoon for better treatment.

The German ambassador to China, Michael Schaefer, visited the injured Monday afternoon.

The accident remains under investigation.

Traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in China, with many new and often poorly trained drivers taking to the roads.

Police, quoted by Xinhua, say about 100,000 have been killed in accidents annually over the past decade, with the figure dipping to 70,000 last year.
