Relapse What To Do – Quit Drinking Alcohol Quit Drugs For Real
In this video I talk about another important part of quitting drinking and drugs and that is relapse. I outline what is relapse, what occurs and strategies you have to avoid it. Relapse is when a person quits drinking alcohol or drugs maybe for a long time and after a period of time they start using again. Relapse has happened to me a lot. I’ve been sober four and a half year but I could start drinking any day so relapse is a continuing reality. Basically when we get sober and sober up there’s always a side to us that feels like we’re not being our real selves. A lot of times we get put into a situation, certain people get around us, and we say that we really want to quit but really we don’t want to quit. In a lot of ways relapse sort of builds on itself. You know that you want to back out and then something might make you snap where you make that decision that now I’m going to start using again. It can either be a planned out thing where you know what time you’re going to do it or it can be spur of the moment an emotional kick you off and the feeling like I’m not being myself or I don’t like this situation will cause you to relapse. It could be work related, it could be family related, it could be friends related or romantic partner related and before you know it you’re right back at it. I’ve tried to quit drinking a couple hundred times in fact when you wake up hung over you think I’m going to quit this time for sure. But even if you try to do something about your alcohol abuse or drug abuse like a detox, rehab or aa meetings as soon as something hits you, you think this whole charade of being sober is over. We really want to drink or drug and acting the sober lifestyle is like playing a charade. I find certain people and situations make me what to go out and drink and it’s really really hard to stay sober. Maybe it’s a sports game, a diner party, a regular party, and you say to yourself you got to stay sober but really you don’t want to stay sober. Therefore it takes a lot of courage and pain to get through those relapse moments. I still have relapse moments today. In the past I would give into the strong emotions to go drinking again. But now I just try to just say to myself, just get through it, just get through it, let it go by, let it go by and that seems to be the only way to stay sober for a long period of time. When you get the real strong cravings to relapse that you just don’t do it. Don’t give in to that craving, don’t give in to that relapse just get out of the situation and think about it and let time pass by. Then the next day comes and your feeling better again. So relapse is reality. It’s a reality I’ve gone through and if you’ve had a problem with drinking or drugging it’s a problem that you’ve gone through. I don’t know if it’s ever going to go away these feelings and emotions that make us want to go back to using. And I don’t know if I’m always going to be able to stay away from it. But what I do know is by mastering these real strong pulls to go back and start drinking or start drugging again that’s the only way I’m able to stay sober. It’s not one day at a time it’s one real strong emotional pull to go back out drinking or drugging at a time. So I hope you like me try to not go back out and relapse. By Jake Johnston
