The effects of an African heritage Interview with Divine Charura As part of the preparations for the Transcultural conference that Colin Lago is organising in partnership with Leed’s Metropolitan University, Divine Charura has agreed to offer this interview. Following the release of “The Handbook of Transcultural Counselling and Psychotherapy” edited by Colin Lago this conference is being planned to offer a forum in which to further our personal and collective exploration in this vital field. Divine Charura has contributed the chapter “The effects of an African heritage” to “The Handbook of Transcultural Counselling and Psychotherapy” edited by Colin Lago. The chapter “explores the general, historic, cultural, religious and other influences of an African heritage and considers how these influences might impact a therapeutic relationship conducted in another country where the cultural style is different.” In the chapter Divine also proposes 10 principles to consider when working with individuals of African heritage. This work is a rich resource for therapists, helping to expand our own world view and openness to the other. Divine is passionate about therapists cultural competence starting with our ability to first of all know and have empathy for our own cultural heritage. From this self exploration we are more able to be empathic towards another’s cultural heritage, creating more helpful therapeutic relationships.
