“Addiction-alcoholism is a family illness”, this is an absolute truism.
Without help the family and also close friends will develop some serious problems due to the stress of being involved with an addict/alcoholic.
Worry, stress, fear, anger, pain, control become the drugs of choice of those involved with the addict/alcoholic.
The stress that comes from watching the progression of the illness in the loved one and also from witnessing their highly risky lifestyle often produces some serious psychological conditions such as
– Depression
– Anxiety
– Panic attacks
– Suicidal thinking and behaviour
Co-addiction may occur where the family or friends mimics the chaotic using to be be close to the loved one. The family member may become involved in buying illegal drugs to help alleviate the pain of withdrawal, they may become involved in poverty and petty theft to support the lifestyle of the addict. Co-dependency may form if long term relationships exist. With the friend, partner or child of the addict loosing their identity in the addictive cycles.
Help is available and is always needed. The non addict can seek that help irrespective of the status of their addict in their life. You don’t have to wait till they are clean and sober.
