Sometimes the only reason we haven’t sought help for a drug or alcohol addiction is the fear of withdrawal or detox. In this video, guests and counselors from Duffy’s Napa Valley Rehab, a residential treatment program in the Bay Area of California help us understand what detox is like at Duffy’s and the difference between being dry and sober. Steve: I am an alcoholic. Prior to this experience, I was losing it. Christy: Sometimes people come under the influence, and some people I’ve seen brought in on a stretcher. Some people’s partners bring them in and they’re staggering down the hallway. Steve: When I came in, I was totally incoherent and was in sick bay for four or five days. Christy: The first week is often a huge process of getting used to being in a brand new place with brand new people, and not having your good buddy alcohol or drug of choice that have been the thing that you’ve leaned on. Steve: The counselors are stupendous. The first couple of days I was here, they held my hand and walked me through it, because obviously I was in bad shape and didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing. Christy: So there’s an adjustment period for people, there’s a clearing of the fog. Gayle: What detox does is remove the drugs from your system so that you’re no longer being influenced by a mood-altering drug. But that’s not the problem.
